What we know about Caesars Superdome

Where visiting fans stay

Checked at the source
  • Central Business District. 8 min by walk. The best thing about this stadium is where it sits, right in the middle of downtown. Most of the major hotels between the French Quarter and the Superdome are a mile or less from the dome, and you can walk most of that distance without trouble. The Hyatt Regency is 0.3 miles away, basically attached to the building. Walk down Poydras or Girod Street and you're there. You're also a short walk from the restaurants in the Warehouse District and the 46 Rampart-Loyola streetcar, and this area is quieter at 2 a.m. than the Quarter.
  • French Quarter. 25 min by walk. Here's a correction to something people assume: the French Quarter is not next to the Superdome. It's at least a mile away at its closest edge, and farther if you're deeper into the Quarter. That's still a fine 20 to 25 minute walk in New Orleans weather, and the Quarter is the better choice for a night out, but if you book a hotel on the far end of the Quarter expecting a five-minute walk to the stadium, you'll be off by four times that.
  • Along the 46 Rampart-Loyola streetcar line. 10 min by streetcar. There's no line called "Loyola-UPT." RTA runs five streetcar lines: 12 St. Charles, 46 Rampart-Loyola, 47 Canal-Cemeteries, 48 Canal-City Park, and 49 Riverfront. The Loyola Avenue and Union Passenger Terminal leg is covered by the 46 Rampart-Loyola. The venue confirms a public transportation stop on Poydras Street, directly across from Gate A Ground Level. Treat this as your backup for wet weather or tired legs rather than your main plan, since the 46 has been suspended before during work on the Canal and Rampart tracks, so check that it's running before you count on it.

Around the stadium

Checked at the source
Champions Square and the Poydras Street corridor. Champions Square is the plaza built right at the dome's doorstep, and it hosts the official pre-game tailgate. Along the Poydras corridor you've got Vitascope Hall (0.1 miles), Borgne (0.2 miles), and Walk-On's Sports Bistreaux (0.2 miles). Really, the whole downtown area counts as the stadium's neighborhood here. This is the one NFL venue where staying near the stadium and staying in the city mean the same thing.

Getting in from the airport

Checked at the source
MSY Louis Armstrong New Orleans International. Take the RTA Airport Express, route 202, to Elk Place or the Union Passenger Terminal for $1.25, or take a rideshare or taxi.

Getting to the stadium

Checked at the source
Walk from a CBD hotel down Poydras or Girod Street, about 10 min to n/a. 46 Rampart-Loyola streetcar. It runs along Loyola Avenue, a couple of blocks from the dome. RTA stop on Poydras Street to Across from Gate A Ground Level.

Tailgating

Checked at the source
Champions Square is your answer, and it works well if you don't have a car. It's an official pre-game tailgate right on the stadium plaza that you just walk into, opening three hours before kickoff, with entertainment running until 45 minutes before kickoff. Two catches: you need a game ticket to get in, and there's no re-entry once you go through the Champions Square gates, so don't plan to step out for food and come back. The venue also bans any unofficial tailgating anywhere on the campus, which makes Champions Square not just the best option, but the only legal one. Champions Square Tailgate requires a game ticket, with no separate admission charge. It opens 3 hours before kickoff, and entertainment ends 45 minutes before kickoff.

Getting in

Checked at the source
  • Bag policy: For Saints games, you can bring one clear plastic bag up to 12 inches by 6 inches by 12 inches, a one-gallon clear freezer bag, or a small clutch bag up to 6.5 inches by 4.5 inches. Coolers, backpacks, and luggage are not allowed. For non-NFL events, the Superdome's own A-Z guide gives a different size: maximum bag size is 12 inches wide by 12 inches high by 6 inches deep, and it must be clear. So check which event you're going to.
  • Re-entry: The Superdome has a stadium-wide no re-entry policy, confirmed by two official sources. If you leave the stadium perimeter, you won't be let back in. If you have to leave and come back, ask for an Experience Ambassador.
  • Prohibited items: You can't bring in outside food or drink, backpacks, large banners, sticks, bats, poles, selfie sticks, video cameras (hand-held still cameras are fine as long as the lens is 6 inches or less), laser pointers, noisemakers, whistles, glitter, helium balloons, vapes, or laptops. That last one catches a lot of business travelers coming straight from a meeting.

Touring the stadium

Checked at the source
The venue says plainly that it does not offer tours of any kind. The only way to see it outside of an event is to walk around the exterior plaza. Don't offer a Superdome tour, since this is clear and comes straight from the source.

After the final whistle

From a specialist guide
If you don't have a car, getting out is simple: you walk out onto Poydras and keep going to your hotel. There's no road traffic to deal with and no train to catch. No official time estimate is published because you don't really need one.

One thing to avoid

From a specialist guide
Don't book out by the airport in Kenner or across the river in Algiers to save money. You'll lose the best part of this trip, which is walking to the stadium and walking back afterward with no rideshare, no parking, and no traffic to fight. Also don't assume the French Quarter is next door; if you want the short walk, book a hotel downtown instead.

Bars near the stadium

Checked at the source
  • The Rusty Nail

1100 Constance Street, New Orleans, LA 70130 (Warehouse District)

The Rusty Nail is the one bar in this area with a real, documented Saints tradition. Every Sunday during football season, it runs $13 domestic buckets and donates $1 from each bucket to Team Gleason, the nonprofit founded by former Saints safety Steve Gleason, whose blocked punt against Atlanta during the Superdome's 2006 reopening is the biggest play in franchise history.

  • Walk-On's Sports Bistreaux

1009 Poydras Street, New Orleans, LA 70112

Walk-On's was started by two former LSU basketball walk-ons, which is where the name comes from, and it grew out of Baton Rouge into Louisiana's biggest sports bar brand. Drew Brees, the Saints quarterback who won Super Bowl XLIV, became a co-owner, so the New Orleans location feels like a Saints room instead of just another chain.

  • Manning's Sports Bar & Grill

519 Fulton Street, New Orleans, LA 70130 (at Caesars New Orleans)

Manning's is the Saints' family shrine, built around Archie Manning, the quarterback who carried the franchise through its worst years, and filled with memorabilia from his own collection along with mementos from his sons Peyton and Eli. The room has more than 30 flat screens, two 13-foot mega screens, a sports anchor desk, and an End Zone section where you watch the game from an actual recliner.
