20 min. METRORail Red Line to Stadium Park/Astrodome. Reliant has almost no bar scene on the stadium campus itself since it's surrounded by parking lots, but it does have a light rail station right at the gate. The METRORail Red Line runs from downtown to Stadium Park/Astrodome in about 20 minutes for $1.25, with trains every 6 minutes on weekdays and every 12 minutes on weekends. That means you get a real downtown with bars and restaurants plus a cheap, frequent train straight to your seat. Downtown is the right place to stay, not a backup plan.

Midtown / Museum DistrictVisiting fans pick this
15 min. METRORail Red Line. Both sit right on the Red Line between downtown and the stadium, so they're closer to the stadium than downtown while keeping full access to the train. Midtown has the busier bar scene of the two, while the Museum District is quieter and puts the Museum of Fine Arts and the Houston Zoo close by for a non-game day. Either one cuts your game-day ride down to about 10 to 15 minutes.
NRG/Reliant Park hotel cluster
8 min by walk. This only makes sense if you want to roll out of bed and walk straight into the stadium. The Crowne Plaza (0.3 mi), Vacation Inn Houston S, NRG Area (0.4 mi) and Extended Stay America (0.4 mi) are all within walking distance of the stadium, but the area around them is just frontage roads and parking lots. You'll end up riding the Red Line into town for dinner anyway, which kind of defeats the point of staying here.
Around the stadium
From a specialist guide
There's no walkable bar or entertainment area right at the stadium. A few spots sit within 0.1 to 0.3 miles, like Asahi Sushi, Russo's NY Pizzeria, and Pappas Bar-B-Q, with the rest spread along the I-610 frontage roads, so it's not really a district you can walk around. The one thing that works here is the rail station, not what's around it.

Getting to NRG Stadium

From a specialist guide
IAH George Bush Intercontinental is about 60 minutes away by rideshare or METRO bus, so budget at least an hour.
On game day

METRORail Red Line to Stadium Park/Astrodome, about 20 min. The station sits on the stadium campus, but plan on a fairly long walk across the parking lots to reach the gates. The stadium directs people coming by train to Gate 2 off Fannin. Red Line service pattern.
Parking and tailgating at NRG Stadium
Tailgating
Checked at the source
You'll need a vehicle for tailgating. The rule is unusually open, tailgating is allowed in all Reliant Park parking lots at every Texans game, not just certain designated lots, but it's still built around parking, so a fan arriving by train has no lot of their own to set up in. The culture is welcoming, though, and lots open 4 hours before kickoff, so a fan who walks around without a car may still get invited in, but that's not something you can promise, just a possibility.

Getting in
Checked at the source
Bag policy: Bags are limited to a clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC bag no bigger than 12 by 6 by 12 inches, or a one-gallon clear zip-seal bag, plus a small clutch no bigger than 4.5 by 6.5 inches. Medically necessary items are the only exception allowed for Texans games. Note that the wider Reliant Park campus rule for non-NFL events is different, allowing an 11 by 17 inch bag with diaper and medical bags let in after inspection, so don't use that rule on game day.
Re-entry: Re-entry isn't allowed. Both the Texans A-Z guide and the Reliant Park campus guide confirm this: once your ticket is scanned, you can't go back in.
Prohibited items: Here's what an international fan should watch for: camera lenses over 3 inches are banned, which is stricter than the 6 inch limit at SoFi, Soldier Field, and U.S. Bank Stadium. Binocular cases and camera cases aren't allowed, and neither is outside food or drink, oversized umbrellas, air horns, whistles, noisemakers, cowbells, backpacks, or coolers. Strollers are allowed, but you have to check them at a Guest Experience booth.
After the final whistle
From a specialist guide
Traffic around the campus after the game is heavy, so the Red Line is the faster way out. There's no official time listed for how long it takes to clear the area after the game. Trains only run every 12 minutes on weekends, so expect a line to build up on the platform after a Sunday game, and you may need to let a train or two go before you can board.
One thing to avoid
From a specialist guide
Don't book a hotel at the stadium expecting nightlife, and don't book far out along I-610 or in the Energy Corridor or Katy just because Houston is known as a driving city. If you don't have a car, the only thing that matters is whether your hotel sits on the Red Line. Also plan extra time for the walk at the stadium end, since getting off at Stadium Park/Astrodome station means a long walk across a large parking lot to reach the stadium.

Red River Ice House
10308 S Main St, Houston, TX 77025
The Texas ice house is a local building type, an open-sided bar with garage doors that goes back to when these buildings sold ice. Red River is the version closest to Reliant Park, which is why local nightlife guides call it the closest proper bar to the stadium.
